Sunday School Recap 04/21/24

In Sunday School today, a Roman soldier (Tim Evans in costume) interrupted music time to arrest all of the students because they were Christians!  He led them down to the "dungeon" (a.k.a. church basement) and put them in a jail cell (storage closet), where a mysterious prisoner (Patty in costume) was being held. That prisoner told them a story from Acts 22-34 about a man named Paul who was once in jail with his friend Silas when there was a big earthquake.

The "jail cell" was pretty small and dark,  but luckily there was a ladder that led to a hatch in the ceiling. Just as the prisoner climbed the ladder to investigate, the solder opened the hatch and told them they were being released!  Each student climbed up the ladder and came out of the hatch, which is on the floor in front of the St. James kitchen.

After being released, the students rushed back to their classrooms to be sure the Roman guard was not going to try to arrest them again, and they had a discussion about what had just happened. Were they scared? When the soldier came into the room, did they try to hide, or did they admit they were Christians? We imagined that this is likely how Paul felt as he continued his journeys, just trying to tell people about Jesus. He was arrested, jailed, suffered shipwrecks, snake bites and many other hardships, but he kept going because he know how important it was to spread the word to all people about the love of God.

This was a really fun lesson that the kids will not soon forget!
