What Are You Looking For?

“When Jesus turned around and saw them following, he said to them, “what are you looking for?”

John 1:38

Keep Me Restless

Hand in hand we walked and talked
as we climbed the winding stair
(she was only three)
in the big house.
I steadied each giant stride,
enjoying every moment.

“What are we doing?” she asked.
“Looking for my car keys,” I replied.
“Oh, Granddaddy,” she exclaimed,
“You’re always looking for and
looking for!”

“The story of my life,” I said,
but only to myself;
she couldn’t have understood.

But, Lord, you understand;
I’m yours, I’m of your searching clan,
at home away from home.
Lord, hold me, steady my faltering steps,
but keep me restless in my rest,
waiting, hoping, journeying,
“. . . always looking for and looking for.”
