First, a word from Kept Moments, by Gerhard E. Frost
The Difference
He’d just received a box of crayons,
a birthday gift. Deluxe, it was,
with more than seventy colors,
and he was proud.
Whenever he found an audience
he’d empty every crayon out,
then separate the color families,
extolling the beauties of each.
Once, when the process ended,
he surprised a viewer
by reaching for one special crayon-
the periwinkle blue-
and saying, as he held it high,
“And this one is so pretty
it makes my eyes wet!”
He didn’t say, “It makes me cry.”
Young as he was, he knew the difference
between grief and encounter with
transcendence.
What readiness to be touched by the
intangible,
what openness to beauty and to God.
Wherever you find yourself in the next few weeks, I invite you to look closely, to really see, the extraordinary beauty of the ordinary things and people that surround you. Be ready. Open your heart to the beauty of God’s presence all around you.
Be attentive to mid-summertime blessings and wonder in the weeks ahead!
Peace
